Bills, bills, bills! Everyone could use a break on their utility bills. When we were flipping through Southern Living Magazine we found some great ways to save money around the house. Everything from filling cracks with toothpaste, to lowering the temperature of your water heater. We highlighted some of our favorites for you.

  • 1. Vacuum your Filter.
Use a hand held vacuum or the hose feature on your vacuum and clean that filter! This quick tip could cut your filter cost in half.
  • 2. Shorten your dryer Vent Hose
Detach your hose and clean it out. Cut the hose down so that you only have enough space to pull your dryer out a few inches from the wall. Not only will your dryer run more efficiently, but it will dry your clothes faster!
  • 3. Lower the Temperature of your Water Heater
Lowering your heater by 10 degrees can save you up to 12% on your bill.
  • 4. Turn your Computer off
Turn your computer off or set it to sleep mode when you’re not using it. This will help save on your electricity bill and the lifetime of your computer.
  • 5. Washing in Cooler Water
You will cut your energy use in half if you use the warm water settings instead of hot water. It doesn’t get any easier.
  • At Casteel Heating and Cooling, we are always looking for ways to help you save. Try these quick and easy tips and let us know how much you saved on your next bill.

Following these tips will help you reduce your energy costs:

    Air Conditioner

    • Bigger doesn’t necessarily mean cooler when it comes to room air conditioners. In fact, a unit
that is too large for the room operates less efficiently than one that is properly sized.
    • Don’t switch the unit off and on. Window units work best when left to run for long periods.
    • Don’t keep the unit running at the coldest setting. Set the thermostat as high as is comfortable.
    • Don’t put lamps or TVs near the air conditioner thermostat.
    • Use interior fans to circulate cooled air more effectively through the house.

Our handy Usage Calculator will help you estimate the cost of using various household appliances.
