So you may be asking yourself, what is a packaged heating and cooling system and why do I need one?  A packaged system contains the same components as a split-system namely the compressor, condenser, evaporator, and the expansion valve – all located in a single unit utilizing less space as opposed to a split-system.  Packaged units are usually installed on the ground or on the roof outside, allowing for both horizontal or down-flow designs.

Packaged heating and cooling systems have been designed to contain all of your heating and cooling equipment in an all-in-one system.  Depending on the weather and your energy needs, there are four types of packaged systems to choose from, each with different functions:

  • Packaged heat pumps that both heat and cool your home
  • Packaged air conditioners that offer cooling for warmer climates
  • Packaged gas-electric units that can switch from electric air conditioning to gas heating
  • Hybrid fuel packaged systems that work as a heat pump, but can also provide gas heating

Some benefits of a packaged heating and cooling system include:

  • Packaged units include all of the components of a heating and cooling system in a single location, saving more space.
  • Energy-efficient performance.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), your heating and cooling system uses more energy than any other system in your home. It’s estimated that heating and cooling accounts for nearly 40 percent of a typical utility bill.

You can save money by regularly maintaining and upgrading your heating and cooling system along with appropriate insulation, air sealing, and thermostat settings.  By doing this, the EERE estimates you can save on your heating and cooling bill, and reduce environmental emissions from 20% to 50%.

Here are a few tips to save on your heating and cooling bill:

  • Use a programmable thermostat and set it at a comfortable temperature.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filters once a month.
  • Clean your warm-air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed.
  • Bleed trapped air from hot-water radiators once or twice a season.
  • Place heat-resistant radiator reflectors between exterior walls and the radiators.
  • Turn off kitchen, bath, and other exhaust fans within 20 minutes after you are done cooking or bathing.
  • During the cooler months, keep the drapes on your south-facing windows open during the day to allow the sunlight to enter your home and closed at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.
  • During the warmer months, keep the window coverings closed during the day to prevent solar gain.
  • Select energy-efficient products when buying new heating and cooling equipment.

By following these tips, you should notice a reduction in your heating and cooling bill! For more information, you can speak to one of our team members or you can contact us online!

No matter how long the winter, spring is sure to follow.  ~Proverb

Thank goodness for that! With Spring comes blue skies, warmer days, longer nights and…..spring cleaning?

That’s right…spring cleaning. What do we have to do with spring cleaning? There’s never a better time to get your AC in shape for the Spring and Summer months! We have complied a list of things you can do to prep your HVAC for the change in seasons.

  1. First and easiest thing to do? Change your filters! This isn’t just for Spring but now is a good time to do it!
  2. Pop your head into your attic to see if your ducts are sealed properly. How would you know? If you have the air on and it’s cold in your attic, you have a leak.
  3. Take a look at your condenser unit outside and see if it looks clean and free of debris that might stop the blades from running. During the winter leaves or dirt can get in there from the weather and they need to be removed.
  4. Make sure your exterior pipes are still properly insulated and protected from the weather. They can take a beating over the Winter months.

Anything else we would prefer you hire a professional to do. At Casteel Heating and Cooling, we are running a Sring/ Summer tune up special. For only $79 we perfrom the following tests and inspections:

  • Test Thermostat Operation / Calibration
  • Inspect Blower Belts

We needed an entire heating and A/C system replaced. Everyone we dealt with was incredibly helpful, professional, and friendly. We received good advice on what type of unit we would need, and the installation was quick and neat. Wayne and Joe are awesome.

Wonderful Service
I purchased a home last April. Casteel installed two new HVAC systems. The service and product were superb! I recently decided to have some duct work changed. Casteel came out and changed around things to my complete satisfaction! Tom Taylor is a wonderful resource, and a great salesman! My original install was completed by Dennis and crew. My new ductwork changes were completed by Wayne and Tony. I can not effectively describe how wonderful these guys are! I wish I had written a review on my original install, b/c they were fantastic. But, Wayne and Tony really went above and beyond on my recent ductwork changes! I know they ran into some major challenges in my attic/crawlspace. But, these guys did not let anything get in the way of completing the job correctly! No shortcuts here! I am completely satisifed with a job well done! I recommend these guys to everyone!
GREAT JOB CASTEEL! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

What does your electric bill normally run? Is it consistent? Does it seem high? Your HVAC system could be the culprit!

Casteel Heating and CoolingFirst thing we recommend is have a licensed contractor come out and take a look at your unit. There are a lot of things that could be causing it to use more energy than normal: 1) Your ductwork could be old and leaking, 2) Your filters need changing, 3) The blower is no longer working, 4) Your unit is just plain old and not as efficient as newer models and so on and so on.

Let the professionals take a look. See if your electric company is offering any kind of incentive or rebate for upgrading to a newer model. Ask if the HVAC contractor has any rebates as well. These steps alone could save you hundreds and maybe a thousand on your installation and equipment. After installation you should see a significant decrease in your bill. Sometimes, your electric company will actually give you credit on your bills when you upgrade your equipment.

Spend a little to save a lot in the long run. You won’t be sorry!

Choosing an air filter isn’t really as easy as going to your local hardware store and picking up the right size. You want to take a few things into consideration. Where is the filter? are you worried about keeping your equipment clean? OR…are you trying to keep the air quality in your home as healthy and clean as possible?

Air filter by AJC1, on FlickrLow to middle rated air filters will keep your equipment clean but have low dust removal ratings as well. These are the typical panel filters (pleated or not) and they usually have a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of less than 12. MERV ranges from 1-16 and obviously the higher the rating, the better the performance.

High efficiency filters do cost more but they also perform better and are generally higher on the MERV scale. Keep in mind that LEED builders use filters with a minimum MERV rating of 13.

Whichever filter you choose, remember to replace it once a month. Some of the higher efficiency filters can be cleaned with warm water and soap and reused. Make sure to factor that into your cost.

I know, I know…it’s still cold outside and we’re talking about Spring cleaning. Believe it or not the official first day if Spring is March 20th and that’s only 38 days away! No need to panic…we have time to get ready and that’s why we’re talking about it now. Just like everything else that gets cleaned out in Spring cleaning so should your HVAC system.Spring cleaning, by Chiot's Run, on Flickr

“But I haven’t used my AC all Winter long.” In a central air system the heating and cooling shares the same ductwork so your ducts have been busy all season long and require cleaning. At Casteel Heating and Cooling we recommend you schedule a tune up for your system when the season changes form Winter to Spring. one of our experienced and professional technicians can come  perform a very comprehensive 25 point inspection. That’s one thing you can check off your Spring cleaning list!
