When you’re too cold, you can’t sleep. You can’t think. Kids can’t study and Santa Claus is a distant dream. This is the situation for too many of Georgia’s families and elderly citizens this year.

According to the latest Georgia Department of Labor figures, our neighbors are struggling with a 42% increase in initial unemployment claims in Fulton County and a 67% increase in unemployment claims in Cobb County. Even before the recent unemployment crisis, 188,000 people lived below the poverty line and mortgage foreclosures were at record levels.

Furnace repairs are too expensive for some families

Heating system repairs quickly mount into the hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars —which is why for many deserving families, these repairs simply cost too much.

While there are numerous worthy organizations dedicated to helping low income families offset their monthly energy costs, Casteel Christmas is the only one that helps our needy neighbors in Cobb and Fulton counties get broken, or inefficient heating systems back online. These types of repairs are costly and require expert technicians. At Casteel Christmas, we have the talent and expertise to take on the challenge.

We are already making a Difference

In 2008, supported by a growing sponsorship base that includes Ironstone Bank, and Kudzu.com, Casteel Heating & Cooling helped needy Cobb and Fulton residents by providing free furnace repair services valued at $100,000.

We believe that through added support and sponsorship, Casteel Christmas will have a long-lasting and meaningful effect on the community through the knock-on effect of goodwill and the difference they make in the lives they touch.

History of the program

Casteel Christmas is a nonprofit organization that came about as an expression of the commitment of the employees at Casteel Heating & Cooling to their community. For over 20 years, the people at Casteel have helped Georgia residents stay comfortable. In 2008, with our community distressed with record unemployment and mortgage foreclosures, we decided to help those in need the best way we knew how—by helping kids stay warm this Christmas through functional furnaces.

What sets us apart

Casteel Christmas is the ONLY program dedicated to helping people offset expensive heating equipment maintenance and repair.

Who we help

Casteel Christmas provides heating system repair and maintenance to legal Cobb and Fulton county residents whose annual income is 150% of the federal poverty guidelines, or who are facing imminent foreclosure on their homes.

How we help them

We have committed labor, talent and repairs valued at $100,000 to help needy and deserving people to get the furnace repairs they need. We are raising money from the community and our sponsors to help increase our ability to help. We also recruit talent from the community and provide a framework for contractors and technicians who want to give their time to this effort.

His entire team has been actively involved in a variety of charities throughout the years and especially in recent months. Last December his company announced Casteel Christmas, the newly minted nonprofit arm of Casteel Heating & Cooling. The organization provides furnace repairs to Cobb and Fulton county residents who can’t afford them.

Bob Casteel and Thermo

“There are several strong programs to help low income residents pay utility bills,” says Casteel, founder of Casteel Heating & Cooling. “But we are concerned about people whose furnaces aren’t even working. We’ve been inspired by programs like H.E.A.T and EAP to create change by giving back to our local community.” The program is designed to be the first in an annual campaign involving other community-minded organizations like Cobb EMC, Ironstone Bank, Kudzu.com, Mount Bethel United Methodist, and Marietta Church of God. This first year they were able to aid over 200 families and hope to double that number next year.

In addition to this program,Bob Casteel has spearheaded efforts to help Atlanta residents to qualify for the new tax rebate, saving individual families upwards of $3,400. The rebates make these important home investment purchases affordable for many homeowners who could not otherwise afford to invest. “We provided both Casteel and manufacturer savings, up to $1,900. In fact, last year we won Amana’s ‘Going Green’ award for installing more Amana Ultra High Efficiency units than anyone else. Some of our customers have noted that their monthly energy bills dropped 31%,” adds Casteel.

And while Bob Casteel is committed to keeping homeowners comfortable with efficient units, he is also just as committed to consumer health and well-being, focusing his most recent outreach efforts on educating consumers about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We’ve seen some uncomfortably close calls. So we came up with the Casteel Carbon Monoxide Protection Program. No one needs to die from this deadly gas,” says Casteel. The company recently launched their “Thermo” campaign aimed at keep consumers educated about the silent danger to their families that may be lurking in their homes.

Here’s more on the Susan G. Komen Foundation

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever.

That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested nearly $1.5 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we’re working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

Cobb County Chamber of Commerce Names Casteel Heating and Cooling to the 2009 Small Business of the Year List

MARIETTA, Ga. — Casteel Heating and Cooling, a world-class service provider of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, has been named to the prestigious 2009 Small Business of the Year list by the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce.  The award celebrates a longstanding recognition of small businesses in the county, and highlights companies that are making a positive impact on the community, especially during hard economic times.

“This outstanding company has grown from its humble beginnings to become one of the leading small businesses in Cobb County and this state,” declared Georgia State Senator Judson H. Hill, representing Cobb County.

Cobb County businesses were selected by an independent panel of judges. Judging criteria was based on a company’s staying power, growth in the number of employees, increase in sales volume, strong financial standing, innovation, community involvement and charitable giving.

“With over 40,000 businesses in Cobb County, it is quite an honor to be in the Top 25 and receive this type of recognition,” said Bob Casteel, owner of Casteel Heating and Cooling. “This award is truly a testament to our extremely talented and hard-working staff.”

John Hillis, Vice President of Casteel Heating and Cooling, attributes the success of his firm to a proactive program of identifying and implementing efficiencies while maintaining a constant focus on the customer.

“We maintained profitability and growth in 2008 by understanding what our customers wanted,” shared Hillis. “By targeting initiatives that were more environmentally friendly and improving system efficiencies, we were able to help customers lower their utility costs. At the same time, we carved out a specialization in our market that insulated us from the current recession.”

Other accolades awarded to Casteel Heating and Cooling in 2008 include Amana’s “Going Green Award,” Trane’s “Platinum Award,” the “Technical Excellence Award” by North American Technician Excellence (N.A.T.E), and Kudzu’s “Georgia Superior Service Award.” For more information, visit: www.casteelair.com or call 770-CASTEEL.
