Sometimes it’s hard to believe that air conditioners weren’t always around, but the creation of air conditioners allowed so many advances in society that we don’t often recognize. For instance, did you know…

  1. The modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Carrier, not for personal comfort, but for a publishing company. The AC kept temperature and humidity low too keep the paper from expanding and contracting
  2. Movie theaters were early adopters of air conditioning. Summer blockbuster exist because people would flock to the air conditioned movie theaters to escape the summer heat.
  3. Air conditioning has changed the way houses are built. High ceilings and large windows that allowed breeze to sweep through the home are no longer needed now that central air can cool all areas of the house.
  4. Air conditioning has helped increase life expectancy and advances in medicine. Hospitals with AC helped allowed advances in surgery, decreased infant mortality rate, inhibited bacteria, and help defeat malaria.
  5. AC has revolutionized many other industries besides medicine: the manufacture of computers and chipsets; data storage centers; the production, delivery, and storage of food; pharmaceutical manufacturing; and chemical manufacturing.

It’s amazing how important air conditioning has become in our daily lives. If you have any questions about your air conditioner, let us know! You can also talk to us on Facebook and Twitter.

Odors increase with temperature, and with the temperature in Georgia rising, you may start noticing some unpleasant smells around your home. It doesn’t happen that often, but when it does happen, it’s something that you can’t ignore. Follow these steps if you notice unpleasant odors in your home:

  1. Look for the source of the smell. The cause may be a dead animal or a mess that was left uncleaned. In this type of situation, if you get rid of the source, the smell should also quickly disparate.
  2. Check your air filter. If your filter is dirty, it may be the cause of the odor. Replace your filter, or wash it if it is reusable.
  3. Check the condensation drain line and rain pan for stagnant water and mold. If the pan or drain line needs to be cleaned, you can do so with bleach and hot water. Remember to make sure that they are fully dry before putting them back in place.
  4. If none of the steps above remove the odor, consider having your entire unit cleaned. There may be an issue in a spot that you cannot access.

Remember that your unit should be inspected by a professional on a yearly basis. If you have any questions, please contact us or reach out to us on our Facebook or Twitter pages.

Marietta lucked out last night when Tropical Storm Debby decided to change her path and head farther east; however, hurricane season is long from over and it’s important to storm-proof your air conditioning system before any major storm in order to keep it in its best condition.

Tropical storms and hurricanes often cause power outages and substantial property damage such as flooding, fallen trees, or breaking outdoor furniture. There are, however, a few simple steps you can take to protect your AC system from harm before a hurricane or tropical storm arrives:

  1. Turn off your air conditioning system before the storm arrives.
  2. Remove any window units or duct systems that exhaust through windows, and seal up windows tight.
  3. Put a tarp over your outside unit to protect from rain and debris.
  4. Secure the unit in place with hurricane straps, if necessary, to keep it stable in high winds.

After the storm, do not immediately turn your AC system back on. You should inspect the outdoor unit to make sure that the surrounding area is clear of debris and that the unit is fully, properly functional.

If your unit does experience some damage, make an appointment with a professional to inspect and repair the unit before you turn it back on.

If you own an AC window unit, you already know they are not the most reliable! If you think your unit is broken, there are a few tell tail signs to look out for from DoItYourself.

Strange Noises

While noise is common with an AC unit, strange ones should not be. If you happen to notice a loud wailing noises coming from your AC unit, it is most likely that your AC unit’s fan belt is not working. It probably has fallen out of place, simply put it back on track and your problem should be solved. However, if it is severely damaged you may need a new belt.

Low Refrigerant

If you have a leaky AC, then you probably have low refrigerant levels. If this is the case you may need to consult an HVAC professional to assist you further.

Pungent Odors

What’s that smell…? Unfortunately, bad odors are a common problem with AC window units. It is usually from a build up of moisture. You can avoid this problem by frequently cleaning your air conditioner’s filters.

Blockage

If the grills on your air conditioner are blocked, then you will need to clean the units motor, fins and fan. Wipe down all of the parts with a clean cloth, but be sure not to get any of the parts wet!

So…any of these problems sound familiar? Yeah, we thought they might! Remember, it is important to take care of your AC window unit and always change your filters! At Casteel Heating and Cooling, we are always here to help!

…and why do I need one?

First of all, let me explain zoning. Zoning is something that allows you to cool or heat only those rooms that you choose. If there’s a room in your home that you only use occasionally or a room that gets used at certain times of the day, you can control the temperature and the times the room is at that temperature or another altogether.

Casteel Heating and Cooling

How does it work? It works not unlike setting timers on your lights. The system allows you to set different temperatures for different zones and uses dampers that open and closed based on your settings for each zone.

What products do we use? We use a Honeywell Zoning System. Honeywell has been using this same idea since 1945 and has developed the technology for today’s homes. Their systems can handle anywhere from two to 32 zones and controls every zone from one device.

What are the key features? It meets the American Lung Association® Health House® guidelines. Its energy efficient because you are not heating or cooling any areas unnecessarily and there’s a five year warranty.
