A new heating and air conditioning system is a big investment, and the last thing you want to do is get mixed up with a faulty or inexperienced contractor. The next step would be running through this quick checklist (think of it like an interview before any work is done). Any contractor with minimal experience should be able to perform the following criteria.

That’s right, fall is almost a week away, and those 55 degree mornings are a nice reprieve from the summer’s heat. But, your HVAC system has been working overtime all summer — so is it ready for the fall?

This is an ideal time to have your system inspected to make sure that it is running as efficiently as possible. When cooling or heating your home, you want to make sure that air gets to the proper areas. If your air flow is lacking, and you’ve already checked and replaced your filter, your air ducts may be leaking and costing you money. 25-40% of your air can be lost due to air duct leaks, and in turn result in decreased efficiency of your HVAC unit and an increase in your utility bill.

Symptoms of are duct leaking are:

• High summer and winter utility bills
• Difficulty in heating or cooling different rooms in your home
• Certain rooms that seem stuffy and uncomfortable
• Some or all of your duct work is located in an attic, crawlspace, or a garage
• Some of your flexible ducts are tangled or kinked within your system

If you feel that you may have a leak, have a professional test your air flow to determine if there are leaks within your system that need repaired. Last week we wrote about copper theft and its effect on your wallet, and we also gave some preventative options to consider. If you’re serious about protecting your A/C investments and yourself against copper theft, refrigerant alarm systems are the way to go.

While other systems are only triggered after the damage has been done which can mean extra money in repair costs, there are various types of refrigerant alarm systems to consider:

• Pressure Sensors
• Voltage Sensors
• Self Contained Alarm Systems
• Monitored Alarm Systems

According to Robert W. Frederick and Associates, monitored alarm systems are generally the best way to go in terms of early detection and additional cost prevention. These systems are connected to a home alarm system, and when a theft is detected the alarm is immediately sounded. Once the alarm has been triggered, the monitoring company is contacted and the police dispatched. Monitored alarm systems are highly sensitive. If the wiring is being tampered with or even if the power is shut off, the alarm will still sound if theft is detected.

Since everyone has different needs, there isn’t a “one size fits all” refrigerant alarm system. Because we care about our customers, we recommend you research the systems we have mentioned above. Researching will give you a better understanding of which system would be the best fit for your specific needs. It was around 9am on the Sunday morning before the big snow/ice storm was to hit and getting out of bed my wife and I immediately realized our house was cold really cold. We have a small child so this was not a good thing. We called Casteel at 9:30am.
